Functional Reflex Therapy - What Is It?

Functional Reflex Therapy (FRT) was developed by Lorraine Senior with the aim of supporting children and adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Special Educational Needs & Disabilities, and is also beneficial to those with Alzheimer’s, dementia and mental health conditions, including high levels of stress and anxiety.

FRT comprises a combination of relaxation techniques drawn from reflexology in that each technique corresponds to a specific area of the body. The routine is performed on the feet or hands and involves slow, repetitive movements to promote relaxation.

Receiving FRT regularly may encourage the release of happy chemicals (eg. Oxytocin) throughout the body, thereby having the potential to induce relaxation, improve mood, reduce anxiety, support wellbeing, encourage social interaction and have a positive effect on the issues that affect the individual.

FRT can be included within a traditional reflexology treatment, or as a stand-alone treatment, depending on the needs of the client.

Who Can It Help?

The Functional Reflex Therapy framework for Reflexology is designed for children and adults with autism, learning difficulties, special educational and additional needs and is proving an enjoyable beneficial experience for more vulnerable adults with dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as those experiencing high levels of anxiety and stress and mental health conditions.

The holistic package of Functional Reflex Therapy offers a unique approach as the structured routine is delivered with the FRT tool kit to support communication and help with preparation for the sessions.

Functional Reflex Therapy Workshops

Functional Reflex Therapy Workshops are designed to empower parents, carers and family members who support children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, complex needs, Alzheimer’s & dementia and mental health conditions.

Being taught the Rainbow Relaxation Routine, the workshop gives you the skills to deliver a short, repetitive relaxation routine that can be undertaken at a time convenient to you.

Workshops aim to be fun, friendly and informative and you will be taught a routine which can be applied to the hand and foot over 2.5 hour sessions which are held over consecutive weeks.

Functional Reflex Therapy is as relaxing for the giver as the receiver.
